Call for Proposals for Establishment of "Physics Day

Call for proposals from members and alumni for the establishment of "Physics Day

October 2024 The Physical Society of Japan Commemorative Project Ad-hoc Committee

The 80th Board of Directors of the Society, upon a proposal from the Temporary Committee on Commemorative Events, resolved at its September 2024 meeting to establish a "Physics Day". The purpose of this resolution is to use the establishment of "Physics Day" as an opportunity to further stimulate awareness of the relationship between physics and society among junior high school, high school, and university students, as well as the general public.

The year 2025 is the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology as designated by the United Nations and UNESCO (commemorating the 100th anniversary of Heisenberg's paper on matrix mechanics), 2026 is the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Society, and 2027 is the 150th anniversary of the Tokyo Mathematics Company (later to become the Physico-Mathematical Society of Japan ), counting from its founding. The year 2026 will mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Society. To commemorate these anniversaries, an ad hoc committee for commemorative projects has been newly established and is planning a variety of commemorative projects. As a part of these activities, "Physics Day" has been established, with the hope that it will remain a focal point for physics awareness activities long after the above commemorative years have come to an end. Hopefully, we will be able to designate the period around "Physics Day" as "Physics Week" and develop various outreach and other activities every year.

Therefore, we would like to solicit suggestions from our members and alumni as to what day of the month should be designated as Physics Day. Then, we would like to take the process of deciding on the "Day of Physics" by a vote of our members on the several proposals made. We would very much appreciate your active participation and many suggestions as to what day of the month and month should be designated as Physics Day. The specific schedule is as follows: we hope to make an announcement at the General Meeting on March 31, 2025, but specific "Physics Day" activities will be implemented starting in 2026.

For your information, the committee members have submitted the following suggestions, but we welcome unique proposals without limiting ourselves to these. Please use the Google Form at the URL below to suggest a suitable day as "Physics Day," along with the reasons for your suggestion. Each person is welcome to submit as many suggestions as they wish.
